Wednesday Movie Club: In the Heat of the Night In-Person
This film is being presented as part of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's Wednesday Movie Club, a weekly showcase of movies that matter. Attendees will be invited to discuss the film immediately following the screening. Registration is not required.
In recognition of Black History Month we'll be watching IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, winner of the 1968 Academy Award for Best Picture and one of the most significant films in American cinema history. The film stars Rod Steiger, whose performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor , and Sidney Poitier, the first person of color to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. As Vanity Fair reported, Poitier literally risked his life -- sleeping with a gun under his pillow during the film's Tennessee shoot as a mob raged outside his motel room -- to portray Virgil Tibbs, a big-city detective who helps a racist Mississippi sheriff (Steiger) solve a small-town murder.
