This month, we’re showcasing films that rewrite the rules of cinema by rethinking how stories can be told on screen. Through bold format choices and inventive use of the medium, these films challenge our expectations while deepening emotional impact. Together, they remind us that cinema is still evolving, and experimentation can be thrilling.
This week, we conclude the series with THE THIN BLUE LINE, a landmark documentary directed by Errol Morris that helped redefine what nonfiction cinema could be. Investigating the wrongful conviction of a man accused of murder, the film blends interviews, stylized reenactments, and an unforgettable score by Philip Glass to construct a haunting, persuasive search for truth. While these techniques may feel familiar today, they were controversial at the time — challenging long-held assumptions about objectivity and ethics in documentary filmmaking — but ultimately proved that expressive cinematic techniques could reveal contradictions, challenge assumptions, and bring viewers closer to the truth.
