Wednesday Movie Club: Hundreds of Beavers In-Person

This May, we’re exploring directors with such bold, unmistakable visions that they refuse to be bound even by the reality of history. Through satire, myth, fantasy, and speculative revision, these films transform real eras into heightened, deeply personal worlds—sometimes playful, sometimes provocative, always distinctly their own.

From director Mike Cheslik, Hundreds of Beavers is an audacious throwback to the silent era—reimagining the 19th-century frontier as a deliriously inventive live-action cartoon. Sporting a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes with reports of audiences literally rolling in the aisles, the film has become one of the most unexpectedly joyous theatrical experiences in recent memory. Shot in striking black and white and propelled by razor-sharp slapstick precision, it follows an applejack salesman turned reluctant fur trapper who must outwit an army of increasingly vengeful woodland creatures in order to survive the brutal winter. With handmade visual effects, deadpan physical comedy, and relentless invention, Hundreds of Beavers transforms frontier mythology into gleeful absurdity—a survival epic that feels like Buster Keaton wandered into a Looney Tunes fever dream and somehow made it work.

This film is being presented as part of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's Wednesday Movie Club, a weekly showcase of movies that matter for people who love movies.  Attendees will be invited to discuss the film immediately following the screening. Registration is not required.
