Wednesday Movie Club: JoJo Rabbit In-Person
This May, we’re exploring directors with such bold, unmistakable visions that they refuse to be bound even by the reality of history. Through satire, myth, fantasy, and speculative revision, these films transform real eras into heightened, deeply personal worlds—sometimes playful, sometimes provocative, always distinctly their own.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, Jojo Rabbit is writer-director Taika Waititi’s daring and deeply human satire set in the final days of World War II. The film follows a lonely German boy whose imaginary best friend happens to be Adolf Hitler—played with absurd bravado by Waititi himself—until his worldview is challenged by a startling discovery hidden within his own home. Balancing sharp humor with emotional sincerity, Jojo Rabbit uses satire and childhood perspective to dismantle hatred and expose the absurdity of extremism. By blending whimsy with heartbreak, the film transforms one of history’s darkest chapters into a poignant story about empathy, courage, and choosing humanity over ideology.
This film is being presented as part of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's Wednesday Movie Club, a weekly showcase of movies that matter for people who love movies. Attendees will be invited to discuss the film immediately following the screening. Registration is not required.
