Wednesday Movie Club: Warrior In-Person
The difference between a great premise and a great story often comes down to two things: "intention and obstacle." What does a character want, and what's standing in their way? The answers create conflict, and conflict is what keeps us invested. This month, we'll watch four films that demonstrate just how powerful that simple storytelling formula can be.
Directed by Gavin O'Connor and featuring powerhouse performances from Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte (in an Oscar-nominated role), Warrior is one of the most acclaimed sports dramas you probably haven't seen.
On the surface, it looks like a movie about mixed martial arts. But don't let that fool you. Beneath the punches and takedowns lies a deeply human story about two estranged brothers pursuing goals that mean everything to them. As they enter the same high-stakes tournament, they're forced to confront not only world-class opponents, but years of pain, resentment, and unfinished business.
Exciting, heartfelt, and emotionally devastating, Warrior explores what happens when determination collides with obstacles that can't simply be knocked out.
