Wednesday Movie Club: The Conversation In-Person
Every October, we like to pay homage to the darker side of the cinematic spectrum. But knowing Wednesday Movie Club's general feelings about gore, jump scares, and serial-killing zombies, we decided to spend the month celebrating the art of the psychological crime thriller instead. We'll be featuring films by some of the greatest filmmakers ever to explore the genre, with one delightfully twisted send-up thrown in for good measure.
Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation stars the late, great Gene Hackman in what many consider the finest performance of his remarkable career. Hackman plays Harry Caul, a brilliant but intensely private surveillance expert who becomes consumed by the possibility that a routine recording may have captured evidence of an impending murder. Co-starring John Cazale, Cindy Williams, Allen Garfield, and a young Harrison Ford, the film gradually evolves from a quiet character study into a tense psychological thriller. A masterclass in suspense, atmosphere, and subtle storytelling, The Conversation won the Palme d'Or at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and remains a benchmark for intelligent, character-driven suspense. More than fifty years later, it's as riveting as ever.
This film is being presented as part of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's Wednesday Movie Club, a weekly showcase of movies that matter for people who love movies. Attendees will be invited to discuss the film immediately following the screening. Registration is not required.
