Wednesday Movie Club: To Have and Have Not In-Person
This film is being presented as part of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's Wednesday Movie Club, a weekly showcase of movies that matter for people who love movies. Attendees will be invited to discuss the film immediately following the screening. Registration is not required.
In honor of Valentine's Day, we’re spotlighting on-screen chemistry, the spark between actors that gives movies their pulse. And what better way to begin than with one of Hollywood’s most electric pairings: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bogart and Bacall would go on to make four films together, marry, and build a legend, but it all started with their 1944 classic, TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Set in Vichy-controlled Martinique during World War II, the story follows a world-weary fishing-boat captain who tries to stay neutral but finds himself drawn into the resistance...and even more powerfully into the orbit of a cool, smoky-voiced nightclub singer who can whistle like nobody else. Directed by Howard Hawks and loosely inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same title, the film simmers with danger, wit, and the kind of charged, effortless chemistry that became legendary both on and off screen.
