On March 26, 1945 -- eighty years ago today -- U.S. forces declared the island of Iwo Jima secure. The victory was a major turning point in the Pacific Theater of World War II, but the preceding five-week battle saw some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the war, with 7,000 U.S. Marines killed and another 20,000 wounded. Clint Eastwood's 2006 film FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS follows the five Marines and one Navy corpsman involved in the iconic flag raising on Iwo Jima. The film is a fascinating look at heroism and salutes those who fought at the battle of Iwo Jima.
